Barakah Meets Barakah

Barakah Meets Barakah is a Saudi Arabian film (2016) that is considered a romantic comedy. It was directed by Mahmoud Sabbagh and it runs for about 88 minutes. The film begins with a title card that says, “The pixelisation you see in this film is totally normal. It is not a commentary on censorship. We repeat, it is not a commentary on censorship”, that in itself immediantly hints us as viewers they are definetly commenting on censorship. At first I was confused but as I watched the film I understood and I thought was very creative.

Barakah (Hisham Fageeh) and Bibi (Fatima Al-Banawi) are the protagonist of this film. Both live a very different life and I'm glad we got to see two sides of the spectrum. Barakah is portrayed as a very innocent, caring and genuinely a good-nature civil servant. This film takes place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He works for the government; he rides around Riyadh issuing tickets for minor offences. Thought the film he mainly focuses on special permit violations. One funny thing he says to the fellow civilian as he is selling his fruit and veggies is, "the streets may belong to God, but that doesn’t mean the greengrocer can hawk his wares without a permit". He was lowkey bogus, but he always meant it with no harm. At the end of the day he is just doing his job, right? On the other hand, Bibi (Fatima al-Banawi) who later on she admits to Barakah that her actual name is also Barakah. Nonetheless she is the social media queen. She is well known influencer on Instagram to be exact. One thing that sets her apart from most influencers is the way she chooses to carefully crop her content, so her face isn't showing. Her Instagram is a business account for her fashion-brand. She focuses on empowerment female by sending out messages daily.

In the film Barakah is called to check on of her public shoots. Immediately you can see Barakah is interested in Bibi. He asks a stranger who walks around about her and doesn't keep his eye off of her. Bibi's crew did not have the correct permit to stay shooting but Barakah asks his co-workers to dismiss the complaint. This shows so much because he didn't want to get on Bibi's bad side.

One interesting scene is when Bibi and Barakah coincidentally meet at an Art museum. They end up making out a day to meet. Barakah was freaking out and told his uncle he has never even held a girl's hand. His uncle in order to calm him. tells him to buy her a gift He ends up going to the mall and buying her some lingerie. What the heck! I mean we have to keep in mind he is an innocent man and doesn't know what is right from wrong when it comes to girls. Bibi didn't take the gift but later she tells her assistant and giggles about it.

Overallthis film was a bit slow in the beginning and I had to work hard to not get distracted but past the first 10-15 minutes.I started enjoying it. I had fun laughing at how amusing Barakah wasNot to mentionBibi's acting was also very entertaining,Jeezall the actors did a great job. On Rotten Tomatoes they rated this film a 3.9/5 but also it was only 6 reviewers and on IMDb they rated this film 6.3/10 stars but also they had about 18 critics. The rating can be very bias because there's not a significant balance. rate this film a 3/stars. Finally, if you are trying to have a great and exciting movie night , I don't think this would be the film for that but this is a good film for a long and laid back day.
